What's the Simplest Way to Manage Your Weight after the Holidays?
Keep it simple* and eat more cereal
Toronto - January 6, 2003 - What's the simplest way to manage your weight after the holidays? Eat more cereal. Sound basic? It is and for the majority of Canadians who feel a need to manage their weight after the holidays, Kellogg Canada today launched its Special K* Keep it simple* Challenge, a 4-week healthy lifestyle plan that involves not only eating a balanced diet, being more active, and keeping a journal, but also increasing consumption of cereal.
In fact, according to two studies published by the Journal of American College of Nutrition over the past two years, increased cereal consumption at breakfast and/or at night can lead to moderate weight loss over two to four weeks.
"Cereal is not only one of the simplest elements of a meal to make but also offers a simple start to healthy living," says Johanne Trudeau, Registered Dietitian and Associate Director Nutrition Marketing. In fact, one of the studies found that night time snackers who ate a serving of cereal with 1/2 cup of low fat milk on at least 24 evenings in a four-week period, lost an average of two and half pounds.
The Keep it simple* Challenge relies on the premise that people are far more likely to adopt new health and lifestyle resolutions if they are simple and easy to maintain. Developed by the Registered Dietitians at Kellogg Canada -- along with Fran Berkoff (as the plan's "dietitian coach") and Olympic Gold medalist and kinesiologist, Dr. Therese Brisson (as the plan's "fitness coach") -- the challenge involves following a few simple steps:
- An easy to follow meal plan that includes everyday foods such as cereal, snacks and even coffee
- Physical tips and activities that everybody can fit into their day
- Journaling personal plans and progress
"The idea is that this is a program anybody can do and keep doing because it is so simple," says Fran Berkoff, renowned Registered Dietitian, nutrition columnist and co-author of three Canadian best-selling books. "The program is not only based on nutrition and science research, but on what we know works for most people -- setting realistic goals for yourself and keeping track of your daily activities."
